Did you know that March is National Autoimmune Awareness month? I didn't. At least not until today.
Autoimmune disorders include a few named diseases such as Chron's disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Systemic Lupus Erythematous but they also include many illnesses that are unnamed. Dr's like to specify these diseases as Unspecified Connective Tissue Disease or UCTD. Sometimes a person can have several autoimmune diseases which Dr's call Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, which is where I fall.
I used to be relatively active and could hold my own among a group of men, but then I started losing my strength, and I was tired ALL the time. I made an appointment with my Dr, and just told her "I don't feel like myself." That's not a lot for a Dr to go off, but she started running some tests.
Everything kept coming back normal until I finally prompted her to run a test for Lupus. That's when we began to see where things were going crazy. We had a direction, so I set up an appointment with a Rheumatologist hoping for answers.
The Jackson Sun has a useful article that outlines five things you need to know about autoimmune diseases and gives a good foundation for understanding autoimmune diseases.
